It's been a long winter. The mild south that burns a wet flame in the hot months has trembled under the weight of foreign ice over the past season. The old men lingering down at the corner store have aches in their knees. The vultures circle. I bang my knuckles against the truck door and curse a wisp of frozen air. And the skies have been the color of ash... like the leftover evidence of a forgotten and fiery summer.
But spring is coming...
I am summoning the sirens of April. With each crystalline breath I urge the sky to lighten and ripen into a glorious golden sunset. I coax the camellias to blossom and fall fast, clearing the colorway for warm-weather flora. I beg the bud, beg the blossom. I count the robins as they flutter in, far too few today but numerous on the horizon.
Bring me the tender sprigs of the tobacco fields. The scent of grass and overturned earth. Green tomatoes and green oaks. Charcoal. Bring me moonshine on moonlit nights under a string of paper lanterns suspended below a canopy of stars. Show me the yellow eastern moon. Show me that the world... that I.... can thaw.
"Spring will come and so will happiness. Hold on. Life will get warmer." -Anita Krizzan
